More GC Photos

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

Saw this over at Sue’s HGL fansite.

GamersUnity.de has posted up a whole bunch of photos from the event. There are pics of the screens as well as of the booth and the nomintions of HGL for the GC awards.

What is one point of interest, is that on the photo of the controls and features there is a picture of the Hellgate Box. It is using the Blue art design we have seen before, so this seems to confirm that it’s the final design for that box.

Enjoy :)

Hellgate at PAX

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

This year, Hellgate was presented at PAX (Penny Arcade Expo) and while it was only there on one computer, HGG member megasheep got to try the game there and has done a pretty good write up of his first game experience. There is talk of the guardian, the marksman as well as a little bit on the summoner.

Go to the thread on it and feel free to ask him questions as he is not under NDA like the Alpha people.

IGN’s GC Report - Evil Eye

Friday, August 24th, 2007

IGN has posted up a short report from GC about Hellgate London. They don’t really go into much detail other than one quest, however they talk about the technology that FSS uses to test various statistic in their game to help them figure out how to balance it better.

In one case, the team was getting feedback from players that the Swordmaster “sucked.” Digging a little deeper, the Evil Eye data revealed that the class fell behind the power curve at level ten. It turns out that nearly every single Swordmaster player choose the Dual Wield ability once it became available at tenth level but the ability wasn’t quite offering up the same damage out vs. damage in ratio that some of the other classes were getting at the same character level.

The Evil Eye information allowed the developers to make some intelligent choices about how to solve the problem. Rather than just tweaking it through trial and error, the developers can see exactly where the imbalance is and address it directly. In the case of the Swordsman, that meant adding the Dual Wield ability as a default ability for the class and slightly increasing the effectiveness of swords across the board.

Though it was originally built for the beta, Flagship plans to use Evil Eye to continue balancing the game once it ships. (EA is also currently encouraging other developers to incorporate Evil Eye into their own development processes.) Given all the extra content that the team has in mind for after the game’s release (new classes, new weapons, new events), this balancing feature will definitely come in handy.

More Games Convention Goodness

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

Once again Sue has alerted us to two articles that talk about Hellgate London at the Games Convention.

The first article is from Actiontrip and talks mainly of the Summoner. It mentions Bill Roper’s view of the game as well:

Bill kept referring to Hellgate: London as an action-RPG that really looks to make the most out of classics like Diablo and Diablo 2. Since most of the development team worked on titles like Diablo 2, including Bill himself, many aspects of Blizzard’s insanely popular hack’n’slash fantasy game made their way into Hellgate.

What also is great to hear is the impact the Alpha testers are having on the game:

In the end, I asked Bill Roper if they were happy with the feedback that keeps coming in from the ongoing multiplayer alpha. He seemed relieved players are able to test and give their own input on the numerous features before they can be put it in the final game. Many times it proved that the design team would get stuck with an idea, related to a class, skill or weapon, and some of the players’ impressions would help sway the decision towards a more satisfying gameplay experience.

Along with this article, is another installment from GameSpy. It talks of the game quests as well as mentioning some of the ads in the game.

We kicked off with “Cleanse Angel Passage,” an easy enough mission for our level 21 Engineer. Before we left our dispatch point of Temple Station, we couldn’t help but notice ads for the Dark Horse Hellgate: London comic and the Hellgate: London novels plastering the station. Looks like some publishers survived the apocalypse.

They mainly talk of the Engineer and the quest for those of you with good memories was shown to us in screenshots of Tanaka. There is also some talk of the summoner and the familiar Millenium Battle mission.

There are some secrets left in Hellgate: London, in particular in its story… and specifics on its monthly premium content. But as we get closer and closer to the game’s Halloween release, we’re happy just to get to see some of the powers that we’ll be using to dominate a demonic London with. We’ll find out the truth behind those secrets soon enough.

Foolish Forecast: GigaMedia on Sale

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

Yes… I did steal the title from the article, but I couldn’t think of anything else…

Scapes just PM’d me this bit of news, which is now a bit old, but still interesting.

So yeah, bascially for those not wanting to read lots of Economics/Finance/Shares style stuff here is a summary.

Taiwanese online gaming expert GigaMedia posted up their second-quarter financial results which has seem a number of Highs and Lows for the year, and was said to be “scraping the bottom of the barrel”.

The interesting bit in this info, is what their managers have said…

What management says:
Last quarter’s operating margin was 24%, way below the 35% seen in the previous quarter. Management explained that the difference was a hefty $0.48 million invested in promoting one game through Taiwanese game shows and television ads. Let’s hope that Hellgate: London returns the favor with a solid sales performance this quarter.

Wow… $0.48 million on advertising. That’s great news for Hellgate and I hope for the sake of the company and Hellgate that it does indeed generate great results in the future for it’s shareholders…

And people say Hellgate doesn’t get enough advertising…. just move to Taiwan people!

Thanks Scapes for the news
