Hellgate: London the 6th Most Popular Game in Korea
GameMeca reports that Hellgate: London has jumped 40 spots to land itself as the 6th most popular game currently being played in the popular PC Bunks (gaming rooms) all throughout Korea, only a week after its release in the gaming-dominated country.
Its success is largely attributed to the marketing campaign that continuously bombarded interested gamers with details about the game’s content, especially that of the Stonehenge Chronicles.
The article reports that the majority of Hellgate’s players were surveyed to be male, and consider playing Hellgate: London to be an extension of their masculinity (or male identity) as they attempt to achieve more progress than their fellow players and dominate the game with the best gear and highest levels.
Due to the nature of Hellgate’s achievement-focused gameplay, the issue of the game’s “limited” release content has been raised, with concerns over whether the on-going content will be able to tide players over. The report also states that the popular opinion from gamers in Korea is that the PVP content is insufficient. Hellgate is growing too fast, they say, so expanded content like Stonehenge (which gets released in February) is absolutely necessary to retain those users.
Hellgate sits in the top 10 list with giants like Fifa Online and Special Forces, which faces threat from Nexon’s newly released Counter Strike Online, a remake of CS: Condition Zero that does not require the Steam service.
